German CV Example: A Real Lebenslauf, Annotated
Rules are easier to apply once you've seen them in a real document. Here's one full, worked German CV for a foreign applicant — every section explained for why it's built the way it is, not another list of abstract dos and don'ts.
A quick note before the example: the section headings and field labels below are in German on purpose — those are the exact words German recruiters and ATS software look for, and that’s what your real Lebenslauf should use. The job descriptions themselves are shown in English here purely so this guide stays easy to follow; your actual CV should generally be written in German unless a job posting explicitly accepts English applications.

What's happening in this example
The header & photo
Name and job title on the left, a passport-style photo box (3.5×4.5 cm) on the right — the standard placement. See our photo section for when it’s worth including one.
Persönliche Daten
Date of birth, place of birth, and nationality are included — still common and rarely an issue. Notice what’s absent: no marital status, no religion. Both were standard once and are now usually left off.
The most recent role
Dates in strict MM.YYYY format, an accent bar tying the timeline together, and three bullets that each carry a concrete detail — a team size, a percentage, a budget — rather than just restating the job title.
The gap, handled
This is the entry worth studying closest: between the Chicago role ending in February 2022 and the Berlin role starting in September 2022, there’s no silent blank. It’s listed as its own line — relocation, a language course, an active job search — so a recruiter reading top to bottom never has to wonder what happened in those months.
Ausbildung
Same tabular treatment as Berufserfahrung: reverse-chronological, dated, one line per qualification.
Kenntnisse
Two columns, not one long list. German is rated B2 — a CEFR level, not “conversational” — and each tool in IT-Kenntnisse gets its own proficiency rather than a single vague self-assessment for the whole section.
The signature line
Place, date, and a line for a signature at the very end — easy to forget, still expected even on a digitally submitted CV.
Three small changes that carry a lot of weight
None of these are dramatic rewrites — they’re the difference between a CV that reads as translated and one that reads as native to the format.

Is this the only acceptable layout?
No — this is one common, safe layout that follows the rules covered in our German CV format guide. What actually matters is the underlying structure (section order, headings, tabular dates), not this exact visual styling. There's room for personal style within those rules.
